Ian Elliot

Stop Bitching, Start Pitching

Ian Elliot spent 30 years in the advertising industry rising from mail boy to Chairman and CEO at Australia's largest advertising agency George Patterson Bates and is now the author of "Stop Bitching Start Pitching" which shows people the 9 success steps to winning business.

His specialisation is in the area of brand strategy and competitive advantage.  He was involved in many of the campaigns developed over the years by George Patterson Bates that are now a part of our daily lives including Ansett, V.B., Arnott's and Panasonic. He's best known as being the architect of the Optus brand having developed the brand essence from a clean sheet of paper and then delivering the 'Yes' campaign, which is heralded as one of the most successful in Australian history helping make Optus a dominant player on the Australian telecommunications scene.

In 1993 Ian attended the Harvard Business School in Boston for 3 months, successfully completing the Advanced Management Program and being chosen as Class Valedictorian.  He's widely recognised as one of the most successful new business winners in Australian advertising delivering $250million in account wins in his role as Managing Director. When CEO in 2000, Patts was named 'Advertising Agency of the Century'.  In 2001 he represented the agency at the prestigious Cannes Advertising Festival collecting the Gold Lion for the best print advertisement in the world. In 2002, Patts won the 'Advertising Agency Employer of the Year' and went on to record its highest ever post deregulation profit.

Ian retired from George Patterson Bates in 2002 at the age of 48. He remains involved in some consulting roles and as Chairman of its media buying business Zenith, which has annual turnover in excess of $1.3 billion.  He's also currently Chairman of Australia's largest sheet fed printing company, the publicly listed Penfold Buscombe. He's on the boards of Lowenbrau Beer in Australia, Hills Industries an Australian leader in electronics, consumer and industrial products and Cantarella Bros. makers of Vittoria Coffee.

In 2003 he continued a long entrepreneurial business partnership with his brother George launching Miracle Productions. Ian's had a long record of community service. For the last 8 years he has been a director of the Starlight Foundation, which grants wishes to critically ill children

 

David Penglase

Dr Xisu Wang

Dance with the Chinese Dragon

Dr Xisu Wang lived through Mao's communism and the Cultural Revolution, studied political, social and cultural reform in China, studied and gained his doctorate and MBA at Harvard in the US, and witnessed China's transition from a socialist planned economy to a free market economy. He is now a business consultant in Beijing, and wrote the first book on business leadership for Chinese nationals.

At the IFA Conference, and for the first time in New Zealand, Xisu will discuss China's place in the world today, how this has changed in the past 100 years, its current social issues and challenges, the role and attitudes of China's leaders, and how the attitudes of China's people will affect its economic growth in future. Tom Potter

The Competition Want you Dead - What are you going to do about it?

Tom Potter is Managing Director and founder of Australian owned Eagle Boys Dial-A-Pizza and in his early 40's heads an expanding $100 million plus pizza empire across Australia and Asia.

Tom left school at 15 to become an apprentice baker but found himself jobless at 23. In 1987 he borrowed the money to open his first pizza shop in Albury, New South Wales.  Today he has built his business to over 145 stores throughout regional and metropolitan Australia, basing stores across Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and ACT.

The Eagle Boys enterprise employs over 2,300 full-time and part-time employees. Tom has set down an ambitious national and international growth strategy for Eagle Boys in the next five years with a focus drive into Victoria and the Asian markets. This following building a 40 store network in New Zealand in only a few years, winning the majority of the market, and selling the operation to a multinational and the proverbial 'offer that was too good to refuse'.

Eagle Boys was awarded the FAANZ Award for Master Franchise of the Year in 1996 and has collectively won the New South Wales and Queensland Retail Franchise of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 1998.   Eagle Boys now remains one of the only wholly Australian-owned and originated fast-food companies, both competing against a majority of offshore-owned fast-food operators in Australia but also exporting its expertise to other countries.

In 1994, Tom Potter was named the Australian Young Business Person of the Year by the Australian Financial Review, entitling him to a scholarship to attend Harvard Business School. He completed a three-year OPM Executive Education Degree and graduated Valedictorian of the 1997 class.

 

Belinda Yabsley

Fostering a culture of Entrepreneurship

Belinda Yabsley has built an inspiring reputation for innovation in the art of customer relationship management. Starting in the automotive industry as a receptionist, Belinda went on to become the youngest Branch Manager of a Mercedes-Benz owned dealership in Australia, and the first female to be recruited for this position. Jim's career began as a teacher and Deputy Principal of a Catholic High School.  Since entering the financial services industry in 1987, he has successfully developed his business to service nearly 6,000 clients.

Jim has completed a Masters Degree in Commerce, majoring in Financial Planning; Diploma of Teaching; Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Magquarie University; and is a Certified Financial PlannerCM.  Jim is currently completing a Doctorate in Business Administration and holds a QPIB qualification for General Insurance.  In November 2005 Jim was awarded the 2005 Zurich / AFA Adviser of the Year.  Jim is actively involved in community activities and in 2006 was awarded with the Baulkham Hills Shire 2006 Australia Day Award for Community Service.  Jim is currently the President of the Association of Financial Advisers for Australia.
